Laing O’Rourke has been awarded Gold accredited membership to The 5% Club, recognising its commitment to the continued development of its people through “earn & learn” schemes.

From an impressive list of members, Laing O’Rourke was one of the 107 employers who met the Gold Standard, acknowledging an investment in early talent programmes such as the company’s apprenticeships, graduates and undergraduate placements, as well as sponsoring employees through further education.

The 5% Club is a dynamic movement of employers all of whom are inspired to take positive action for increased, inclusive, and accessible workplace training for all. With a membership which now exceeds 750 companies, The 5% Club represents over 1.6 million employees, 93,500 of whom are in “earn and learn” schemes. Gold accreditation was secured via the Club’s 2022-23 Employer Audit Scheme - a unique scheme which validates the employers’ activities, explores their future plans and commitments, as well as examining their approaches to quality, social mobility, diversity and inclusion.

At Laing O’Rourke we invest in our people for the long term and are proud to have been awarded gold accredited membership to the 5% club, it’s wonderful to be recognised for our efforts.

Today’s apprentice, graduate or undergraduate placement student will be tomorrow’s technician, supervisor, manager or even senior leader. The investment we make in our early talent programmes provides the capabilities and skills the individual will need for their future and allows us to develop industry leading talent, in support of our 2025 mission to become the recognised leader for innovation and excellence in the construction sector.

We are so pleased to be given recognition for the work we put into our continued development of our attraction and selection processes.

We have been busy supporting our sustainability goal of achieving equal numbers of men and women among our global staff and this year (2022) I’m pleased to say we have successfully reached a 50:50 gender split across our early talent programmes, bringing more diversity to our talent, and therefore bringing value to Laing O’Rourke.

Mark Cameron OBE, Chief Executive at The 5% Club said:

“Our Employer Audit scheme recognises the efforts of all those employers who invest in their workforce through a broad range of workplace learning schemes. It is fantastic that in these challenging times so many are able to commit to the Employer Audit and to gain the credit for their efforts, and that the majority are striving to expand their schemes over the coming years. Their efforts and achievements are to be applauded.”

Gill Cronin, Director of Operations at The 5% Club added:

“Having seen The Club grow to more than 750 members, I am always impressed at the commitment, drive and energy our members channel into offering “earn and learn” skills opportunities. To now see so many of these members gain Bronze, Silver and Gold accredited membership of The Club is inspiring and demonstrates how these companies are all contributing to the future of skills in our economy.”

Laing O’Rourke will work alongside the 5% Club, and their partners and key influencers to inspire positive action for increased and accessible workplace learning, focused primarily on the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates employed. The company shares the goal of The 5% Club which is to increase the employment and career prospects of today’s youth and equip the UK with the skilled workforce it needs to safeguard Britain’s economy.
