Laing O'Rourke completes scope under the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct Development

31.12.24

Laing O'Rourke is pleased to announce the completion of all our contracted works under the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct Redevelopment Program in Darwin.

The Precinct, comprising of Barracks and HMAS Coonawarra, is a strategically vital location from which military operations are mounted, deployed, and sustained, and serves as Australia’s gateway to the Indo-Pacific.

Since its original construction in 1932, the barracks and HMAS Coonawarra's berthing and fuel storage infrastructure at the 80-hectare Precinct provide key service to the Royal Australian Navy, Army and Joint Task Force units in the Darwin area.

In 2016, Laing O’Rourke was appointed as the Managing Contractor by the Department of Defence to upgrade the infrastructure and increase capability of the Precinct. Major construction commenced in 2019, with completion achieved in December 2024.

Laing O'Rourke's works under the project were split across two parts. The first component of the project upgraded key services including power, water, stormwater, sewerage, and communications, along with a new Base Entry Precinct and new facilities for NORFORCE.

The second component focused on facilities to support Navy operations, including a new outer wharf, warehousing and ready-use fuel storage at HMAS Coonawarra. This new wharf accommodates varying combinations of major fleet units, minor war vessels, submarines, and other ancillary vessels.
