The National Safety Awards of Excellence, now in their 25th year, are Australia’s premier safety awards and the only national independent awards programme.

The awards recognise and reward organisations and individuals who have gone the extra mile to improve the health, safety and wellbeing of their employees and show continuous improvement in their business performance.

Laing O'Rourke’s submission featured the 100 Mount Street project, a Dexus commercial development in the heart of the North Sydney CBD on the corner of Mount and Walker Streets. When complete the building will be North Sydney’s largest and tallest commercial tower, incorporating the latest innovations in high rise design and construction.

Laing O’Rourke’s Southern Region Director Mark Dimmock said he was extremely proud of the team and what they have accomplished.

“It’s fantastic to receive such outstanding industry recognition of the dedication, commitment and passion our people put into safety every day,” Mr Dimmock said. Laing O’Rourke’s industry-leading Next Gear safety agenda challenges the traditional approach to safety. It builds safety resilience into the organisation and is centred on three key principles:

1. People are the solution
2. Safety is the presence of positives
3. Safety is an ethical responsibility and not a bureaucratic activity

“Next Gear challenges us to move beyond traditional safety practices and measures and recognise that statistics are not necessarily an indicator of safety success,” Mr Dimmock added.

“Our approach is founded on engagement and trust, placing our people at the heart of safety decision making and focusing on understanding success and the many things that go right.

“We have a long and proud history of delivering critical infrastructure across Australia, and to receive such a prestigious industry award is testament to Laing O’Rourke’s unwavering commitment to keeping our people safe.”
