Sustainability

As a purpose-led organisation committed to delivering better outcomes, sustainability and ED&I are central to the way we go to work – and a core part of our long-term business success.

Construction has a unique role to play in making or breaking the communities it serves. It can transform an area into a thriving, prosperous hub, or risk leaving behind an unfavourable legacy. Navigating this balance is both a significant responsibility and an immense opportunity. We know that sustainability is one of the key drivers to realise this opportunity.

Our business has voluntarily committed to stretching sustainability targets covering carbon, social value, and ED&I.

In construction, carbon reduction is not only a moral imperative – it drives efficiency, cost discipline and innovation, as well as reducing risk, and increasing resilience to climate change. It is also what our clients and partners rightly demand and one of the key reasons why they choose to collaborate with us.

Sustainability is more than our environmental footprint. A truly sustainable business has people at its heart, and we remain committed to embracing diversity within our teams, knowing
this will encourage fresh perspectives and help bridge industrywide skills gaps.

Pushing the boundaries

We are transforming the way buildings and infrastructure are engineered and built.

  • By 2030 we aim to have reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% and Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services by 25%.
  • By 2050 we will be a net zero company delivering nature positive solutions with teams that represent our diverse society.
  • By 2033 we will achieve 50/50 gender balance among global staff.

We are shaping a lasting legacy for our clients, our environment, our people and society.

At Laing O’Rourke, we understand the role we must play in improving the lives of people while preserving the health of the planet as we deliver the buildings and infrastructure projects society needs. Pushing the boundaries sits at the heart of Laing O’Rourke’s purpose. It’s what makes us different, and it shapes how we think and act.

Our sustainability approach is aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We’re focused on developing action plans to deliver progress against the SDGs which are of most relevance to our business operations.
