Each year, IPA recognises excellence in delivering infrastructure across Australia. IPA’s ‘Smart Infrastructure Project’ award recognises new standards for design, delivery and use of smart technologies in the provision of infrastructure.

The NGR Maintenance Centre was designed and constructed by Laing O'Rourke for Bombardier Transportation, using unique Laing O’Rourke’s Digital Engineering capability and was delivered safely, six weeks ahead of schedule and under budget.

The NGR Maintenance Centre forms part of the Queensland Government’s NGR project, which also includes the delivery of 75 new six-car trains and the maintenance of the trains at the centre for a period of approximately 30 years.

Laing O'Rourke Managing Director Cathal O'Rourke said he was incredibly proud of the team.

"This maintenance centre has been a fantastic project – delivering certainty for our clients at Bombardier Transportation and the Queensland Government – and delivering a win for the Ipswich community.

“It has also put the spotlight on the role our unique and industry-leading Digital Engineering capability has in planning and delivering all forms of building and infrastructure."

“For example, our Digital Engineering capability meant that more than 3000 in-ground service clashes were detected and resolved before construction began. Later in the delivery phase, we brought in train drivers to study the visibility of the lights and signalling, directly from the centre’s digital model.”

"The NGR Maintenance Centre was also recently profiled by the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre to identify and assess the added value of creating industry benchmarks for implementing Building Information Modelling (BIM) in whole-of-life asset management."

Laing O’Rourke is proud to be announced a joint winner of the IPA ‘Smart Infrastructure Project’ award, alongside the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads, Qtectic and Bombardier Transportation.
