Hinkley Point C Project Progress Welcomed03.08.15
The Bouygues TP/Laing O’Rourke (BYLOR) joint venture has welcomed significant announcements made by EDF NNB, regarding preferred bidder contracts for future work at the proposed Hinkley Point C new nuclear power station project in Somerset.
Although EDF is still to make its final investment decision regarding the infrastructure scheme, the £1.3bn contract values to UK companies will be seen as a major boost in confidence for the infrastructure project.
The preferred bidder status announcements cover almost every area of the project, including transport, mechanical and electrical installations, accommodation, power transmission, catering and many other services. Laing O’Rourke (Wales & West) has been named with regard to the Campus Accommodation project.
Commenting on the news, an EDF NNB spokesperson said “The announcement highlights the contribution that HPC will make to the development of the UK’s economic and skills base and also demonstrates another positive step towards the final investment decision for the project. It will also help UK businesses to build expertise to enable them to win further nuclear work nationally and globally.”
Martin Westbury, Bouygues TP/Laing O’Rourke (BYLOR) Project Director said “This is great news for our company and for the South West. The HPC project continues to move ahead, and we are continuing to work closely with EDF NNB, and other businesses in the UK supply chain, to move the scheme to the next level. Today’s announcement represents a massive confidence boost and a real opportunity for growth and the development of UK skills.”
Once operational, the Hinkley Point C new nuclear power station will provide reliable, low carbon electricity to meet 7% of UK demand. During its estimated 60 years life, it will avoid around 9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. An estimated 25,000 job opportunities will be created across the project during the construction phase, including 1,000 apprenticeships.
EDF’s final investment decision for Hinkley Point C is expected in the coming months.
