Laing O’Rourke establishes relationship with Green Steel of WA Collie to enable local capability and accelerate availability of low embodied carbon steel rebar in Australia
12.02.26Laing O’Rourke is pleased to announce the signing of a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Green Steel of WA Collie (GSWA), an innovative new Australian steel manufacturer focused on leading Australia’s transition to low embodied carbon steel reinforcing bar (rebar) production.
Through these types of relationships, we are demonstrating our commitment and long-term approach to building local market capacity and capability, especially ahead of upcoming major opportunities in Australia’s current construction pipeline. By supporting local supply chain partners we can contribute to a positive legacy, support Australian manufacturing, and directly respond to calls to action from our clients to drive increased use of local market solutions to deliver local projects.
The MOU formalises a collaboration that supports the development and market availability of Australian-made low embodied carbon steel rebar at scale, explores innovations of mutual interest and of benefit to the wider market, and identifies opportunities to use GSWA’s low embodied carbon rebar on Laing O’Rourke construction projects across Australia.
Hollie Hynes, General Manager – Sustainability and Environment, said:
“This collaboration positions Laing O’Rourke to meet emerging government requirements on embodied carbon disclosure and reduction, while giving our clients greater access to low embodied carbon steel rebar as production scales. It demonstrates industry leadership in enabling the supply of locally produced low-carbon steel and delivers decarbonisation outcomes aligned with our clients’ ambitions and Laing O’Rourke’s own Science-Based Targets.”
Dr. Ralf Dicke, Director – Strategy, Transformation and Innovation, added:
“Collaboration and innovation across the value chain are critical to accelerating the delivery of decarbonised infrastructure. This MOU is another example of Laing O’Rourke’s commitment to using innovation as a mechanism to pioneer new approaches to the delivery of infrastructure, setting a new benchmark for the industry.”
