Building a diverse and inclusive workforce

We’re working towards gender equality as part of our commitment to make the construction industry more diverse and inclusive. In 2018, we implemented our Gender Diversity Action Plan in Australia and formed a dedicated Diversity & Inclusion Council. Since then we have built colleague-led diversity sub-committees to help us achieve our target of achieving 50/50 gender balance among global staff by 2033.

“We know that diversity is a complex issue. We can’t just pull one lever or expect one change to make that difference. A complex web of change is required, and we know that implementing policies today does not equal cultural change tomorrow. It takes time. While we know there is still a long way to go, we are confident we are taking the necessary steps to drive long overdue change.”

Helen Fraser Director - People - Australia

In 2011 Laing O’Rourke led the industry in Australia when we launched our parenthood policy. In July 2022, we raised the bar higher with the launch of our global parental leave policy, providing every Laing O’Rourke employee with access to six months’ parental leave on full pay. Parents who adopt or welcome a baby via surrogacy are also entitled to leave. Our commitment to equal parenting will enable us to create better gender balance and shape an organisation that attracts, supports and retains the most talented people.
