Laing O'Rourke is at the forefront of the design and delivery of power infrastructure in the UK and Australia.  We have industry-leading expertise in all facets of engineering in nuclear, thermal and renewable power generation.

In addition to our engineering, procurement and construction offering, we have the skills to modularise major aspects of a power project, delivering tangible benefits in both delivery and operational phases.  With the new nuclear programme high on the European agenda, we are working with governments, energy producers and prospective partners to design, deliver and maintain the next generation energy fleet.

Nuclear

BYLOR, a partnership between Laing O’Rourke and Bouygues Travaux Publics, is delivering the main civil engineering works at Hinkley Point C, worth over £2.8 billion. Hinkley Point C is the first nuclear power station to be built in the UK for a generation and BYLOR is responsible for constructing over 60 major structures over a seven year period, and at peak construction the project will have over 3,000 employees. 

Laing O’Rourke has unparalleled nuclear expertise and track record, having previously delivered Sizewell B in Suffolk in the mid-ninties; the first pressurised water reactor to be constructed in the UK.

Thermal

Laing O’Rourke has extensive experience of building gas and coal-fired thermal generating capacity in the UK and Australia. We can provide a full lifecycle service offering in project management, digital modelling, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning services necessary to provide our clients with certainty of outcome. 

Laing O’Rourke also has expertise as a supplier of power transmission and distribution networks to the power supply industry. Our infrastructure expertise covers design, construction, maintenance and supply of overhead transmission lines and underground cabling. 

We’ve participated in the construction of a large proportion of the power stations build in Australia over the past 40 years, incorporating civil works, materials handling systems, boilers and turbines, electrical systems and control mechanisms and ongoing maintenance and expansion services.  

Renewable Energy 

Renewable energy is expected to make a significant contribution to global energy generation, and is increasingly forming an important element of the overall energy generation mix. Laing O’Rourke has a growing capability in renewable and alternative sources such as wind, hydro-powered, solar and next-generation bio-fuels. Through our Engineering Excellence Group we are acquiring a deep understanding of the complexities inherent in any renewable energy project, and can deliver the innovative solutions to maximise the investment returns to clients.

AT HINKLEY POINT C WE ARE CONSTRUCTING OVER 60 MAJOR STRUCTURES. OVER THE LIFE OF THE PROJECT WE WILL ERECT 50 TOWER CRANES AND AT PEAK CONSTRUCTION, THE PROJECT WILL HAVE OVER 3,000 EMPLOYEES.

Laing O’Rourke completed the last nuclear power plant to be built in the UK - the Sizewell B Reactor. Project success owed much to the achievement of the 400 intermediate access dates along the critical path, facilitated by excellent working relationships between Laing O’Rourke and the client.

The Darling Downs Power Station in Queensland is one of Australia’s greenest electricity generators. Completed in 2009 for Origin Energy, the Laing O’Rourke team brought civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering to the 630MW project which can power 400,000 homes, while creating half the greenhouse gas and using less than 3 per cent of the water of a traditional power station.
