The project was part of the NSW Government’s Newcastle Urban Transformation Transport Program, a coordinated program of planning, urban renewal and transport initiatives designed to attract people back to the city centre and rekindle the vibrancy of Newcastle’s CBD.
Laing O’Rourke has designed and constructed the new fully-accessible transport interchange at Wickham as part of an integrated transport solution to better connect the city centre to the harbour and improve the experience of moving around the city.
The new interchange has enabled customers to easily connect with trains, light rail, buses, and taxis and take advantage of facilities for cyclists and car drop-off and pick-ups.
Key features include:
- New intermodal fully accessible interchange
- Taxi spaces and a kiss-and-ride facility
- New platforms and concourse
- Fully accessible pedestrian bridge over the rail corridor
- New crew and staff facilities
- New power system, communication and lighting systems
- Modifications to existing roads and overbridges
- Rail infrastructure and stabling yard
Future proofed landmark transport hub
Given its importance to Newcastle’s development, the Interchange is a landmark facility and has been designed with an innovative nodal roof frame to create an iconic and instantly recognisable structure that pays tribute to the City’s steel manufacturing history.
Environmental and cultural sensitivities
The project site includes a range of elements, items and structures that have environmental and cultural value to the local Newcastle community. These include the State-heritage-listed Hamilton Station, geologic profiles with potential to contain Aboriginal archaeology and areas where potential relics from 19th century railway operations could be present.
The project site operated under an ‘unexpected finds’ procedure. Archaeological test excavations have uncovered a number of Indigenous artefacts. Locally significant relics have also been preserved from Hamilton Station and a 100 year old brick oviform sewer is also being preserved using a cure in place liner to retain the shape and integrity of the sewer.
Sustainable contractor
The Laing O’Rourke team is committed to delivering sustainable infrastructure. Involved in a trial roll-out of the Transport for NSW Carbon Assessment & Reporting Tool (CA&RT), the project is on target to achieve a “commended” rating in the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) guidelines, as well as a Silver rating in the TfNSW Sustainability Guidelines.
You can read more about ISCA and its rating tools on the ISCA website.
