Full project details
Sheffield's Meadowhall is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK.
Having successfully delivered a major refurbishment at Meadowhall in 2007, Laing O'Rourke was appointed by British Land as the principal contractor in 2015.
Using recent experience from successful retail projects, such as Trinity Leeds and intu Nottingham Victoria, the team delivered a two-year programme that minimised disruption to the centre's visitors and tenants, and provided certainty for the owners.
Digital Engineering was employed in the pre-construction phase to develop innovative approaches to the project. Working with in-house services specialists Crown House Technologies, one of these was to relocate engineering services from the existing mall onto the roof. This allowed the construction of double-height shop fronts, allowing retailers to take advantage of brighter, airier spaces.
The majority of work 'front-of-house' took place outside of normal trading hours to make sure it had no impact on the centre’s operations. This included the installation of new lifts, new balustrades, streamlined mall routes, improved floor finishes and the installation of contemporary architectural features and lighting.
