Full project details

Laing O’Rourke is building Stage 1 of the University of Sydney’s Engineering and Technology Precinct (ETP) as part of a multimillion-dollar revitalisation.

Laing O’Rourke is building Stage 1 of the University of Sydney’s Engineering and Technology Precinct (ETP) as part of a multimillion-dollar revitalisation.

The Stage 1 works involve the design and construction of a new Micro Engineering Building that will incorporate 11,000m2 of new space and 6,000m2 of refurbished facilities.

The building will include research and teaching labs, office areas and teaching spaces. The project also involves the associated demolition works and selected infrastructure upgrades, as well as staging and decanting works in adjacent buildings.

Sustainability

During design development we worked closely with our client to develop a solution that achieved a 4-Star Green Star Design rating. This is a first for a building in the history of the University of Sydney’s campus.

We harnessed our experience with similar sustainability schemes on other projects, including the design and build of 100 Mount Street, Sydney and were able to implement similar sustainability initiatives on this project.

The design of the new building includes energy efficient lighting, improved indoor air quality features, solar photovoltaic system, and promotion of sustainable transport, stormwater design, acoustic comfort, and surface heat reduction conscious landscape design.

The project was awarded a four-star Green Star Design rating for the building’s design features in October 2020.

The Green Star Design rating demonstrates a unique achievement – upgrading an existing 60-year-old building and connecting this to an entire new building space.

The Green Star As-built rating will follow in mid-2021 following practical completion of the building.

Project facts

The Stage 1 of the Engineering and Technology Precinct (ETP) Project is part of a greater revitalisation of the University’s Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology Precinct.

Sustainable design features including rainwater harvesting, solar power generation and energy efficient building services.

It has been designed to achieve a 4-Star Green Star Design and As-built v.1.2 rating.

We’re showcasing our digital engineering capabilities to enhance the design, construction and operational phases of the ETP Stage 1.
