Laing O’Rourke has been confirmed as the Managing Contractor for the planning phase of the Australian Defence Force’s Air5428 Pilot Training System Facilities project.

Under this contract, Laing O’Rourke will initially be responsible for the design of key infrastructure at the RAAF Base at East Sale in Victoria, and RAAF Bases Pearce and Gin Gin in WA, as well as related minor works in South Australia and New South Wales.

Subject to Parliamentary Approval and contract negotiations for the delivery phase, Laing O’Rourke will manage the construction of new hangars, shelters, stores, classrooms, simulators and briefing rooms, accommodation and other base upgrades.

Air5428 will deliver new pilot training infrastructure – taking a trainee from initial flight screening through to his or her entry into advanced fighter training courses.

Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Leo Davies, said publicly that the new training system is about much more than just acquiring a new aircraft.

“The new pilot training system will enable us to use the latest in simulator technology that can be adapted to student needs and different learning styles to allow students to progress through training faster.”

Laing O'Rourke Vic/SA Region Director Pat Cashin said the win confirmed Laing O’Rourke as a trusted partner for Australian Defence, and as an industry leader in the sector.

“After an Australia-wide response from our business, we secured what is arguably the most important Defence infrastructure project of the current period,” Mr Cashin said.

“We have built strongly on our experience on major projects for Defence, including the Moorebank Units Relocation project in Sydney and the planning phase of the Battlefield Airlifter project in Queensland.”
