Health & Safety
Al Raha Beach

ALDAR Laing O’Rourke’s efforts to lead the UAE construction industry in health and safety came to fruition in April 2009, when 18,000 employees celebrated working 10 million man-hours without a reportable lost-time incident at the Al Raha Beach project.

The entire workforce gathered at an event to mark the milestone, led by Laing O’Rourke’s Middle East and South Asia Managing Director, Christopher Wilkinson.

Our employees pay attention to one another and we recognise it,” he said. “This achievement is something of which we can all be proud and it should further inspire the construction industry.”

Incident & Injury Free
A comprehensive behavioural safety programme, Incident and Injury Free (IIF) represents an industry-leading cultural change in the way we manage health and safety. The programme encourages employees to be more risk-aware and empowers them to speak out against bad practice.

IIF focuses on making safety relevant, personal and important to everyone, underlining the personal responsibility we each have to ourselves and others.

The programme is continuously reviewed and developed to ensure all our employees return home safely every day. In particular, we believe that instilling an understanding of safety in our designers can help ‘design out’ risk and eradicate safety issues on site. We are also working to address areas of risk management through a tailored training programme for supervisors, who need to be able to deal with challenging situations.

The success of IIF is demonstrated by Laing O’Rourke’s achievement, on its Yorkshire Water projects in the UK, of over one million accident-free working hours.
