Nuclear

As the last company to build a nuclear reactor in the UK with the commissioning of Sizewell B in the mid nineties, Laing O’Rourke’s unparalleled nuclear expertise and track record has been maintained in the UK.  The nuclear industry has very complex requirements and for over four decades we have brought our vision and proven delivery capability to provide critically needed design, construction and lifecycle services to the nuclear power generation and waste management industry.

In March 2012 Laing O’Rourke, in joint venture with Bouygues TP, was appointed preferred delivery partner for the main civil engineering works to receive two AREVA EPR reactors at EDF’s proposed new Hinkley C Nuclear Power Station in Somerset.  Subject to planning consents and the outcome of the final investment decision, Laing O’Rourke will be responsible for the effective delivery of the first of a new fleet of EPR nuclear reactors in the UK. 

Laing O’Rourke’s civil engineering and Engineering Excellence Group offer early-stage preconstruction services to clients covering energy strategy, energy storage, carbon capture and management, fossil, thermal and nuclear power generation, transmission and distribution. 

Thermal

Laing O’Rourke has extensive experience of building gas and coal-fired thermal generating capacity in the UK and Australia. We can provide a full lifecycle service offering in project management, digital modelling, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning services necessary to provide our clients with certainty of outcome. 

Laing O’Rourke also has expertise as a supplier of power transmission and distribution networks to the power supply industry. Our infrastructure expertise covers design, construction, maintenance and supply of overhead transmission lines and underground cabling. 

We’ve participated in the construction of a large proportion of the power stations build in Australia over the past 40 years, incorporating civil works, materials handling systems, boilers and turbines, electrical systems and control mechanisms and ongoing maintenance and expansion services.  

Renewable Energy 

Renewable energy is expected to make a significant contribution to global energy generation, and is increasingly forming an important element of the overall energy generation mix. Laing O’Rourke has a growing capability in renewable and alternative sources such as wind, hydro-powered, solar and next-generation bio-fuels. Through our Engineering Excellence Group we are acquiring a deep understanding of the complexities inherent in any renewable energy project, and can deliver the innovative solutions to maximise the investment returns to clients.

Sector facts

Laing O’Rourke completed the last nuclear power plant to be built in the UK - the Sizewell B Reactor. Project success owed much to the achievement of the 400 intermediate access dates along the critical path, facilitated by excellent working relationships between Laing O’Rourke and the client.

Working with the supply chain and the client on the Encapsulated Product Store (EPS3) at Sellafield nuclear plant, Laing O’Rourke produced a 100% reliable, zero-wastage source of nuclear-standard concrete at an output that allowed over 1,000m³ repeat pours to be achieved. The project was recognised as ‘Best Construction Site’ by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

The Darling Downs Power Station in Queensland is one of Australia’s greenest electricity generators. Completed in 2009 for Origin Energy, the Laing O’Rourke team brought civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering to the 630MW project which can power 400,000 homes, while creating half the greenhouse gas and using less than 3 per cent of the water of a traditional power station.
