Oil & Gas

With little sign of a let up in the world’s consumption of fossil fuels, Laing O’Rourke’s specialist engineering and construction delivery skills are ensuring the efficient and timely delivery of major oil and gas installations on and offshore in Australia.

Overview

Our inventive approach to construction, employing the very best thinking in structural, process and geotechnical engineering, is supporting our clients in becoming more efficient and sustainable, helping to minimise the cost of supplying energy to the end user.

Laing O’Rourke’s specialist engineering, project management and self delivery capabilities combine the necessary infrastructure and marine experience to create client solutions that improve the exploration, processing, storage and transport of liquefied and gaseous fossil fuels. With the current focus on the oil and gas reserves of Australia and Oceania, we are the only engineering and construction contractor to provide a complete, multi-disciplined, self-delivery offering to our valued clients.

Working with companies engaged upstream in activities ranging from exploration and extraction through to processing and distribution demands an absolute focus on safety and sustainability.

Our well-deserved reputation for anchoring safety at the heart of our business ensures there is no compromise between meeting the client’s objectives and providing a safe and responsible environment for those tasked with achieving them.

Likewise our rigorous approach to quality assurance through the rigid application of the Group’s Core Process QMS, ensures the safe, efficient and economically viable utilisation of these assets over their entire operational life.

Our expertise covers all types of terminal construction and also extends across modularised technical solutions in LNG storage, including our innovation on the Ichthys LNG project to engineer, procure and construct a network of four massive cryogenic tanks, in joint venture with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, employing leading precast techniques in the assembly phase.

We also specialise in the design, construction and commissioning of overland and sub-sea pipelines and associated pumping facilities. We provide a total solution leveraging the benefits of close collaboration, early contractor involvement and innovation to balance the interests of the environment with the cost and time targets of the client.

Laing O’Rourke’s innovations in worker accommodation coupled with our progressive industrial relations approach through direct employment also helps simplify construction of these facilities, particularly where remote locations or challenging conditions can make execution difficult and costly.

Sector facts

Laing O’Rourke is currently engaged with the delivery of four of the world’s largest Oil and Gas sector projects with a combined total project value well in excess of $100 billion dollars.

To provide delivery certainty and workforce management during the construction phase, Laing O’Rourke is also designing and building three major accommodation villages in remote Australia to service the Oil and Gas projects where we also provide technical engineering services.

Our work on Barrow Island for Chevron is being conducted under the world’s strictest environmental controls, with the site – a class 1 nature reserve – requiring even the ink in a ballpoint pen to be subject to intense pollution controls.
