Laing O'Rourke delivered a range of new facilities as part of a major extension and upgrade to western Sydney’s Nepean Hospital at Penrith. Key to the project was an integrated fit-out within a constrained, high-traffic, mission-critical site.

Nepean Hospital is the major referral and teaching hospital in Sydney’s fastest-growing area. More than 51,000 people are treated in its emergency department each year, with 10,000 emergency and planned surgical procedures also carried out. The $69 million extension and refurbishment, jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments, will cater to the growing demand for acute care services and surgical procedures in greater western Sydney.

The works will also provide for improved models of care, better clinical functionality and more efficient staffing. It was not the first time Laing O’Rourke had worked on the hospital; the company was responsible for designing and constructing parts of the original facility. This time, Laing O’Rourke was selected to carry out the extension and upgrade after winning and completing an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process with the NSW Government. This provided the client with additional time and extensive cost analysis to help steer the project.

Construction began in mid-2010 and was completed in early-2012. The upgrade includes the following new facilities: six operating theatres, two 30-bed surgical wards, extra day only and extended day only beds, a 12-bed intensive care pod including 5 additional ICU beds, and a multi-faith chapel. The ICU component of the project was conducted in the centre of the existing hospital, which meant that the works took place adjacent to hospital activities. Even so, Laing O'Rourke successfully carried out the demolition and structural phases of this project without any disruption to clinical services.
