Full project details

In January 2011 Laing O’Rourke was awarded the contract to deliver the $136 million Griffith University Health Centre project on the Gold Coast. The project involved the design and construction of a new Centre for Medicine and Oral Health and Common Use Teaching Facility for Griffith University.

The new eleven-storey Centre for Medicine and Oral Health comprises the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Oral Health, and Psychology and is capable of supporting teaching, research and clinical activities and facilities.

The three-storey Common Use Teaching Facility building incorporates two lecture theatres (600 seats and 200 seats), four seminar rooms (30 seats each) and a common foyer with servery.

The project included significant public space to support the activities of both facilities. Due to the proximity of the Common Use Teaching Facility to the adjacent public areas, there is significant cover across this space to provide protection from the elements.

Delivered under a two-stage Managing Contractor (design and construct) contract, the project has enhanced patient care, student education, clinical training, research and community services across one of Australia’s fastest growing regions.

Project facts

Griffith University Health Centre is a unique health, education and research facility for the region

The Griffith University Health Centre represents the university's largest investment in a single building project in its 40-year history.

The project was the subject of a design competition run in parallel with the selection of the contractor. Laing O'Rourke was part of the selection process for the winning architectural scheme.

The facility is the home of special laboratories that use processes known as plastination to preserve human bodies to help train new doctors and nurses.

WINNER - Best Health and Education Facility ($20-$150 million) in the 2014 Gold Coast Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards.

I congratulate all who have been involved in the vision, design and construction of this impressive health centre.
Sustainability has been a key priority at every stage. From the use of recycled timber and other materials through to rainwater harvesting and the choice of drought tolerant plants, it looks to the health of our environment as well as our bodies.
