The Darwin Convention and Exhibition Centre, located on the fringe of Darwin’s CBD, is the centrepiece of the Darwin City waterfront redevelopment. Constructed by Laing O’Rourke through a public–private partnership, the centre has transformed the area into a destination drawcard for locals, business travellers and tourists.

Located on reclaimed land on the eastern edge of the waterfront development, the four-storey Convention Centre features a 1500-seat tiered plenary hall, seven meetings rooms and 4000m2 of exhibition space. A distinctive design feature is the epic floor-to-ceiling class walls that offer panoramic views of the nearby wave lagoon, parklands and harbour.

Other features include three function rooms to seat a total of 357 people and four meetings rooms to seat 194 people, state-of-the-art audio visual facilities, kitchen facilities with the capacity to cook up to 1500 meals a day, and parking for 302 vehicles.

With a total floor space of 30,000m2, the building has a structural steel frame with composite in-situ and precast concrete floors. The external walls comprise an amalgam of glazing, precast concrete, deep-profile metal cladding and metal sun-shading louvres to the west facade. The roof area consists of deep-profiled metal deck roofing material to counter Darwin’s high rainfall.

The project team was a member of the Darwin Cove Consortium, which involved Laing O’Rourke, the Northern Territory Government, ABN Amro, Toga and Sitzler Pty Ltd. Laing O’Rourke delivered the project under a turnkey arrangement, and the team was responsible for all aspects of delivery including furniture, fixtures and equipment, construction management, planning and specialist services installation.

Laing O’Rourke adopted a number of key construction techniques for the project. As well as using precast concrete panels instead of blockwork for the walls, the team used 3D modelling to achieve the roof profile curves, and installed an Ortech insulation system for the roof that eliminated the need for high elevated work platforms. This resulted in a safer and more cost-effective roof construction.

Laing O’Rourke completed the project ahead of schedule in 2008. That year, the project received the President’s Award at the Territory Construction Awards, the Engineering Excellence Award at the Engineers Australia (Northern Division) Awards, and the National Master Builders Association’s Award for Public Buildings over $50 Million.

I was lucky to be working with Laing O’Rourke. The project manager and I had a very open and honest relationship—we both had great respect for each other’s roles and credentials and we just collaborated well to ensure a very good product.
