In 2010, Queensland Health awarded Laing O’Rourke the construction contract for an eight-storey combined health service facility and multi-storey car park, as part of the $446.3 million redevelopment of Cairns Base Hospital.

In 2010, Queensland Health awarded Laing O’Rourke the construction contract for an eight-storey combined health service facility and multi-storey car park, as part of the $446.3 million redevelopment of Cairns Base Hospital.

Block E, on the corner of Lake and Grove Streets, was developed to provide 650 parking spaces and facilities to deliver priority cancer care services to the region, including new radiation oncology services. Parking for 92 bicycles was also provided to promote the use of alternative transport in the City of Cairns. Three linear accelerator bunkers and oncology support and treatment facilities are now housed within the ground and the first two levels of Block E.

Pathology occupies the third level, and the upper levels provide car parking for hospital staff, the general public and Queensland Health’s regional fleet vehicles. Block E also houses the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation Office, Engineering and Clinical Support Services, retail facilities, and associated road and landscaping works. The inclusion of the new Liz Plummer Cancer Care Centre means that up to 340 women a year are no longer forced to make the trip from Cairns to Townsville for breast cancer treatment.

The building has an overall area of 29,336m2, and is constructed from in-situ cast concrete and post-tensioned floor plates. Laing O’Rourke’s design management and construction experience complemented the expertise of the client's appointed multidisciplinary design consultants, and the project was delivered in a reduced timeframe.

In mid-2009, then Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and Treasurer Andrew Fraser visited the hospital and said the decision to award the construction contract for Block E to Laing O’Rourke was an important milestone for the redevelopment of the Hospital. Premier Bligh opened the facility in 2011.
