Full project details
A project team comprising Laing O’Rourke, Fulton Hogan and AECOM, in an alliance with Public Transport Victoria, Metro Trains Melbourne, the Level Crossing Removal Authority and VicRoads, is removing the level crossings at Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road and rebuilding Bayswater Station to create a vibrant – and safer – centre for the Bayswater community.
The Bayswater Level Crossing Removal Project is removing two dangerous and congested level crossings at Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road and constructing a brand new Bayswater Station with a modern transport interchange.
The project will:
- Lower the rail line below Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road
- Raise Mountain Highway at the point of the crossing to allow continued train access to the Train Maintenance Facility behind Bayswater Station
- Rebuild Bayswater Station
- Allow platforms to be accessed via lifts, ramps and stairs
- Reconstruct the station car park, optimising parking and providing the same number of spaces
- Build a walking and cycling path.
The project will create a vibrant centre for the community, with free-flowing traffic, improved pedestrian and cyclist access and excellent connections to the new station precinct.
Digitally engaged community
In a first for Victoria, Digital Engineering is being used for early engagement with the community and stakeholders. Project specific digital tools, such as an Augmented Reality App, make key project information available on smart phones and tablets and puts the project directly into the hands of the local community and project stakeholders.
Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) rated project
The ISCA Rating Tool will be used on the project, delivering the first ISCA rating for a level crossing removal project in Victoria.
ISCA is the peak industry body for advancing sustainability in Australia’s infrastructure. ISCA developed and administers the Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating scheme, which is Australia’s only comprehensive rating system for evaluating sustainability across design, construction and operation of infrastructure (including environmental, social, economic and governance aspects).
Creating a vibrant and safer community
The project supports VicRoads' and Knox City Council's vision for the area, helping to create better cycling and pedestrian facilities, widening footpaths and bike lanes on Mountain Highway, and creating better connections into and around the station and activity centre. This video produced by the Level Crossing Removal Authority explains how the area will look and work once works are completed.
