VENUESLIVE Management Services, operator of ANZ Stadium, recently confirmed that Laing O’Rourke had been charged with the responsibility to replace the Stadium’s existing roof to improve the fan experience at major sporting and entertainment events.

The project will see Laing O’Rourke responsible for the replacement of more than 400 old and weathered roof panels – or 4.5 hectares of roof sheeting – with an upgraded polycarbonate product that has been specifically designed for the Stadium.

The scope of work also includes painting of the main structural steel elements of the Stadium’s main roof trusses and perimeter truss.

Laing O’Rourke Region Director Mark Dimmock said the organisation was delighted to play a part in enhancing the experience for fans at one of Australia’s biggest venues.

“We started work on site in January and have already completed installation of the new roof across half of the West Stand,” Mr Dimmock said.

“Once complete, fans will notice a huge difference at events in terms of appearance and better protection from the elements.”

Work is due be complete by September 2017.

The roof replacement is designed to work in synergy with the upcoming ANZ Stadium redevelopment, which is due to commence in 2019.

The NSW Government announced in April 2016 that ANZ Stadium – Sydney’s Olympic showpiece – will be transformed into a world-class rectangular stadium as part of a $1.6 billion investment in NSW sporting infrastructure.

The existing roof structure provides protection from the elements for more than 75 per cent of fans at the 80,000 capacity ANZ Stadium, which was purpose-built for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Fans will notice a progressive and dramatic change to the appearance and event experience in the Stadium, and the construction phase will have little discernible impact of major events this year.

ANZ Stadium, also known by its generic name Stadium Australia, has welcomed 24.6 million patrons through the gates since it was opened in 1999 in the lead-up to the Sydney Olympics.
