Highly commended for DfMA
Laing O'Rourke has been highly commended at Engineers Australia's Sydney Engineering Excellence Awards.
A finalist in the Products, Manufacturing Facilities and Processes category, Laing O’Rourke’s entry demonstrated how its Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) process improved the constructability, quality and safety on the Northern Water Treatment Plant (NWTP) in South East Queensland.
The lean construction and DfMA process – developed during the design and planning phases – involved using 3D design, off-site manufacturing of building components, and a just-in-time assembly methodology.
By employing the DfMA approach, Laing O’Rourke was able to eliminate inefficient processes and maintain greater control over projects costs and risks. The success of the constructability and improved safety and quality on NWTP are now benchmarks for other Laing O’Rourke projects.
Hub Head of Engineering Alan Ainsworth said DfMA is a key area that sets the company apart from its competitors.
"By bringing together engineering excellence, digital engineering, DfMA, and our capacity to self-deliver all project elements, Laing O’Rourke not only stands out as a reliable delivery partner, but is also paving the way for change in the industry.”
SEEA 2014 recognises the contributions engineers make to communities through innovation, teamwork, ingenuity and creativity. The award program provides an opportunity to encourage excellence through the identification and promotion – both within the profession and the community at large – for outstanding achievements in the advancement of the science and practice of engineering.
