Barnsley Interchange awarded Gold for civil engineering works

BarnsleyThe iconic Barnsley Interchange project has received the Institution of Civil Engineers’ (ICE) “Gold Medal” as overall 2008 winner of the Yorkshire and Humber Award, for Excellence in Concept Design and Execution of Civil Engineering Works.

The award was presented to Laing O’Rourke and Arup (Structural Engineers) at the ICE’s annual dinner in Harrogate and beat off strong competition from over 180 nominated projects, including the Re-cabling of the Humber Bridge and Bridgewater Place in Leeds.

The £24m interchange project, designed to be an inspirational gateway to the town, is the first to be completed as part of the Will Alsop Masterplan for the regeneration of Barnsley over the next 30 years, and has been nominated for multiple awards since its completion in 2007.

The judges said:

"Located in the heart of Barnsley, this project certainly has Wow factor. Its contemporary appearance is inspiring and refreshing. By maximising the use of recycled materials and taking advantage of daylight and natural ventilation, the project’s environmental credentials are to be applauded.”
