St Pancras wins Project of the Year Award… again

The £800m project to extend and refurbish St Pancras International has scooped yet another ‘Project of the Year’ award, this time at the RICS Awards held last week at The Millennium Mayfair in London.

Laing O’Rourke worked in a fully integrated consortium with Costain, Bachy and Emcor Rail to transform St Pancras Station into a terminal for Eurostar high-speed rail services. The grade one listed building fell into neglect during the 1980s but is now one of the largest, most prestigious passenger interchanges in Europe, forming the London gateway for Eurostar.

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link project took a special approach to design and engineering. Key structural changes were essential elements of the build in order to accommodate the 400 metre long Eurostar trains and increase capacity for domestic services. It was also critical that the construction approach was sympathetic to the architectural integrity of the original station, preserving the history and charm of the iconic building. By working as one team on this project – engineers, designers, conservation consultants and the client – Laing O’Rourke was able to provide a world-class solution for a world-class building.

Significantly, the project has underpinned widespread regeneration in the area by providing a major impetus for investment, reinforcing Laing O’Rourke’s commitment to impact favourably upon the communities we serve.

Simon Pott, chairman of judges said: "This project is a remarkable example of a carefully designed and completed building project that is delivering powerful regeneration to surrounding areas. St Pancras International delivers not only excellent functionality, but a stylish and beautiful destination that loses none of its original charm. It is a truly exceptional project."

The RICS Awards recognise excellence, value for money and a commitment to sustainability. Project of the Year is awarded to any entry that is judged to have excelled in any, or all of the main categories. This year’s winners were announced by Kevin McLoud, the Channel 4 presenter of Grand Designs.
