I think if you are prepared to put something extra into the relationship then the client recognises you are absolutely on their wavelength. That works both ways: you get back helpful support and encouragement.
With the Highways Agency the teams I’ve led have developed a deeper understanding of the client’s needs and we’ve worked with them to overcome some difficult challenges. In Cumbria for instance we were creating a unique piece of civil engineering within the UK’s premier national park. It was hugely sensitive. We were integrating this dual carriageway into the landscape as seamlessly as possible while managing perceptions from many interested parties.
It’s the same client, but a different scale with the M4 Motorway interchange near Reading. Again, you have to really work closely with your customer to understand their needs and make sure local stakeholders are listened to and then go about acting on all of that. |
